Night trains between Paris and Berlin are discontinued

The night train between Paris and Berlin rolls onto the siding in December. The reason is missing grants from France – despite good demand and criticism from politics.

The night train between Paris and Berlin, which was introduced again two years ago, will be discontinued in mid -December. As the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) announced, this is related to the cancellation of state grants in France. As a result, the night train between Paris and Vienna will also take place from mid -December. The decision slows down the growing number of people who put on the track for international trips. Because there are no other suppliers of night trains on the two routes.

Night trains could only be driven with the participation of international partners, explained the ÖBB, which was responsible for the night connections. It is regretted that the connections from Paris to Berlin and Vienna can no longer be offered with the French withdrawal.

According to French media reports, it was about annual grants in the millions, since the connections are not profitable despite lively demand. This is also due to the fact that the night trains are on the siding during the day, while an ICE, for example, several times a day on one route and is therefore more economical.

Brigitte Klinkert, Member of Parliament, from the Alsace, criticized the night trains. “This decision is unacceptable, especially since the high capacity utilization of these lines clearly shows the great interest of passengers in rail connections between our countries,” said Klinkert, who is also co-chair of the Franco-German parliamentary assembly. “These connections are a climate -friendly and efficient means of transport that attracts many travelers and at the same time represents a strong symbol of cooperation and friendship between France and Germany.”
