Ten-second transfer will be mandatory everywhere from October

Important for bank customers
Immediate transfers without extra costs are standard-you need to know that

So far, immediate transfers have cost many banks. From October you will become the standard. The EU money institutes are already late.

Bank customers also had to be patient in the digital age: transfers were usually only credited on the next working day. For immediate transfers, additional costs were due for many banks. However, this has come to an end from October: the transfers in seconds become the standard.

From now on, all banks and savings banks must be able to receive real -time transfers in euros. The money flows from one financial institution to another within ten seconds. The second step then follows on October 9: From then on, the banks are obliged to offer the immediate procedure for outgoing payments. The transfers may be carried out around the clock. For non-euro transfers within the EU, real-time transfer is to be implemented from 2027.

Another advantage for customers in addition to saving time: the transfers must not cause any extra costs. So far, many banks have been paid the service with a separate fee. Now this is only allowed if normal transfers cost something. However, the fee for conventional transfers must not be exceeded.

The service providers must also offer their customers a free, immediate review of the recipient’s identity in order to avoid transfers due to error or fraud. In practice, this is done by a comparison between recipient names and Iban. This is to prevent abuse – because the danger is significantly greater for immediate transfers. The consumer advice center warns of mindfulness, especially in the initial phase.

PayPal and Co. are much further

The background to the change is a decision of the EU Parliament from February of last year. The Christian Democratic EPP faction spoke of a “turn of time in payment transactions”. However, this is also long overdue: US services such as PayPal, Google Pay or Apple Pay have been offering such service for a long time. In this respect, it remains to be seen how the real -time transfers are accepted by customers at classic banks and savings banks.
