Meat replacement is trendy, but Soon, terms such as “burger”, “sausage” or “Schnitzel” could be taboo for veggie products. There is sharp criticism of the project.
The European Parliament wants to have names such as “veggie-burger” or “soy-schnitzel”. According to a majority of MPs, terms such as “steak” or “sausage” should only be used for animal foods in the future. The EU countries would have to agree to the project so that the requirements can come into force.
The responsible MP Celine sees “a real confusion risk”, since plant -based replacement products do not offer the same nutritional values as their animal originals. In addition, the politician of the EPP parliamentary group, which also includes the CDU and CSU, wants to protect farmers with the project.
Sharp criticism of the desired veggie name ban
Consumer advocates and companies from the food industry criticized the planned ban sharply. The organization Foodwatch announced that nobody accidentally bought tofu sausages because he believes that they were beef sausages. Several companies such as Aldi Süd, Lidl and Burger King had also spoken out against the project in a joint letter.
Germany is the largest market for vegetable alternative products in Europe. In 2024, around 121,600 tons of meat replacement were produced in this country – twice as much as in 2019.
Parliament must now find a final agreement in negotiations with the EU countries. So far, the federal government has not announced a position on the parliamentary decision.
