The managing director of the IMF is part of the negotiating tables between Luis Caputo’s economic team and US Treasury officials.

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, praised the fiscal adjustment carried out by the Government as an example in the world. However, he warned that the program needs political support to have lasting success.

Within the framework of an exhibition at the Milken Institutethe representative of the organization recalled the cases of European countries that had “examples of brave leaders who did very difficult things, cut pensions and salaries by 40% or 50%, and were re-elected” because “they managed to get people to accompany them.”

In that line, He maintained that Argentina is “giving a very important signal, even to the private sector” by defending the fiscal balance tooth and nail, but added that needs popular legitimacy. The statements come just days before the national legislative elections on October 26, for which the Government arrives with several alleged illegal causes among its officials and doubts on the economic level about the sustainability of the exchange rate scheme.

Faced with this scenario, the economic team has already been in the US for five days, seeking to finalize the details of financial aid. It is worth remembering that the North American Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessentmade repeated statements in support of the Government of Javier Milei, although later he put cold words on whether or not this implied a significant outlay of money by Donald Trump’s administration.

Georgieva, as director of the IMF, is part of the negotiating table with the economic team led by Luis Caputo and American officials.
