The cost of basic baskets in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) rose more than 2% during September. In line with what happened with the district’s general inflation, an acceleration was observed compared to the previous month.

As reported this Monday by the Institute of Statistics and Censuses of CABA, the Basic Food Basket (CBA)which measures the indigence line, rose 2.1%. Meanwhile, the Total Basic Basket (CBT)used as a threshold to measure poverty, grew 2.2%.

Therefore, a family made up of an adult couple, both economically active and homeowners, with two children, needed more than $674,757 so as not to fall into destitution and more than $1,255,934 so as not to fall into poverty.

The city defines CBA as the set of foods that are part of the structure or consumption pattern of the population, in quantities that satisfy energy requirements. It adapts to the greatest possible degree to the nutrient intake recommendations, at the lowest possible cost.

While, to build the CBT, other subbaskets of non-food goods and services that are part of the structure or consumption pattern of the population are added.

The valuation of both baskets is carried out by applying the Buenos Aires Consumer Price Index (IPCBA), which rose 2.2% in September.

Price increases accelerated in CABA: how much did a Buenos Aires family need to be middle class?

But, in addition, CABA prepares other consumption baskets “more adjusted to the living standards of a district like the City of Buenos Aires, which allow the dynamics of these consumption patterns to be evaluated over time and which serve as a reference to evaluate, among other uses, the purchasing power of salaries.” Among them is the Total Basket (C.T.), used to segment the different situations of the “non-poor” in terms of income.

In September, CT was valued at $1,597,902. The statistics institute considers those who earn between one CT and 1.25 CT as the “fragile middle sector.” In addition, those with incomes between 1.25 and 4 CT are categorized as “middle class”; Consequently, to be part of this group a “typical” family required a minimum of $1,997,377.71.

It is worth remembering that in August inflation in CABA had been 1.6%, while baskets had risen between 1.2% and 1.4%.
