The Minister of Economy described the meeting as “spectacular” and stated that the markets reacted downwards due to a “misinterpretation” of the US president’s statements.

The Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, spoke tonight about the meeting led by the president Javier Milei with the US president, Donald Trump, in the White House, which led to a markets crash given the confusion generated by the electoral statements of the Republican magnate and the lack of announcements about an eventual trade agreement. In this regard, he stated that the fall in shares was due to a “misinterpretation” of the American’s word and assured: “Announcements will be made soon.”

The head of the economic team gave a television interview from Washington, where he is with the presidential delegation on the occasion of the bilateral meeting that took place this afternoon. “The meeting was spectacular,” He said and appreciated the “generosity” of the American President for returning from the Middle East, where he led the signing of the peace agreement on Gaza, to participate in the meeting.

Although confirmation regarding a possible commercial understanding was expected, Caputo assured that they are still working on the details. “We hope there will be announcements soon,” The minister said and added: “We prefer not to say anything until it is finalized.”

“As soon as we formalize it on paper, the Chancellor or the Secretary of Commerce will be announcing it,” said the head of the Treasury Palace and stressed that Trump himself is closely following the negotiations.

During the meeting, Trump warned that his country will not be “generous” with Argentina if Milei loses the elections. “He may not win, but I think he will win. And if he wins, we stay with him. And if he doesn’t win, we leave,” he said.

Asked by the A24 channel about the markets’ reaction, Caputo said that “it was confusing and different from what happened at the meeting. There was an erroneous interpretation based on the belief that the support of the US president only lasted until October 26.” “It has nothing to do with that. Trump’s support is for Milei’s management“said the minister.

“All the effort that we have been making for months talking with them, what we are fixing and what the US is doing, is not for eight days. It will not be subject to whether an election is won or lost by a point or two. What Trump wanted to make clear is the alignment with Argentina and the support that the US gives to what is the economic path that we are following. What he said is that as long as Argentina remains on this path they will follow us supporting,” he reaffirmed.

For the head of the Economy, the market “interpreted Trump’s words of support in a different way.” “Surely tomorrow it will be corrected, because it was clarified by President Trump and the Secretary of the Treasury (Scott Bessent)”he said and reiterated: “The meeting was spectacular and I don’t think additional clarification is necessary.”
