The Russian state media RT and Sputnik are banned in the EU. This extends to social media: access to profiles on Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok is blocked.
After steps by the EU to ban the Russian state media RT and Sputnik, the Facebook group Meta and the video app Tiktok are taking action. They restrict access to content via geo-blocking in the European Union.
Facebook’s political chief Nick Clegg wrote on Twitter that night to justify that one had received corresponding requests from several governments and the EU. In addition to Facebook, Meta also includes the photo and video app Instagram.
Blocked via geoblocking
A Tiktok spokesman confirmed the action taken against Russian state media accounts in the EU, including the Wall Street Journal and the US broadcaster NPR. Tiktok is owned by the Chinese group Bytedance.
With so-called geo-blocking, content is blocked in certain regions based on the IP address of the user.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Sunday that the Russian state media RT and Sputnik would be banned in order to ban “poisonous and harmful disinformation in Europe”.
