Use of temporary work decreased in the corona pandemic

In 2021, 167,400 workers were hired out by personnel service providers in various sectors, according to current data from Statistics Austria.

“Temporary work often fulfills the function of a buffer for companies, with which workers can be deployed flexibly depending on the order situation. The effects of the corona pandemic have led to a significant decrease in the number of temporary workers: from July 2018 to June 2019, temporary work was used 523,500 times, it was only 373,900 times in the comparable period from July 2020 to June 2021,” said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Every second employed for less than a month

The average duration of the assignment from 2020 to 2021 was 88 days. More than half of the assignments (55 percent) lasted less than a month, the broadcast said.

Tourism was particularly affected by the decline. In this sector, the annual average of temporary workers fell from 2,300 in the 2019 survey year to 980 in the 2021 survey year, which corresponds to a minus of 57 percent. The decline in trade (from 5,600 in 2019 to 5,400 in 2021) and in industry (from 32,900 in 2019 to 31,200 in 2021) was more moderate. Transport and traffic recorded the largest increase in leased workers. An average of 4,900 workers were hired out here in the 2021 survey year (2019: 4,500). There was also an increase in trade and crafts, where the number of leasing climbed from 27,500 (2019) to 28,200 (2021).

Significantly fewer temporary employees were also drawn from the European economic area. The number of assignment episodes has shrunk continuously since the survey year 2019 from 16,500 to 14,600 (2020) and 9,000 (2021).

From mid-2020 to 2021, around 5,900 workers were hired out to Austrian companies. Most of them came from Slovenia (640), Germany (420) and Hungary (350).
