Will chocolate be cheaper again this Christmas?
The price of cocoa has fallen. But what impact does this have on the price of chocolate, which has recently risen sharply? And above all: How can customers save?
Cocoa has become cheaper. The price is at its lowest level in almost two years. Actually, that should mean that chocolate prices are finally falling.
They had recently skyrocketed: Anyone who wanted to buy chocolate in September 2025 paid a full 21.2 percent more than in September 2024. And the manufacturers usually justified their increases with the high price of cocoa.
There is a glimmer of hope for cheap chocolate
But you shouldn’t have any hopes of falling prices at Christmas because of the price of cocoa. Armin Valet, food expert at the Hamburg Consumer Center, says: “Many companies have also increased the prices of Christmas products again.”
Valet looked at the stock market price for cocoa between 2011 and 2022: It remained roughly unchanged during that time with minor fluctuations. The price of chocolate, however, rose enormously in the same decade. A Ritter Sport table, for example, cost a whopping 67 percent more. So the connection between cocoa and chocolate prices is not as direct as one might think.
But something else could possibly make Christmas chocolate cheaper: namely the fact that the sweet is now becoming too expensive for customers. “We are seeing huge declines in sales,” says Valet. “We assume that the threshold price will remain the same, but retailers will offer promotions with lower prices.” For customers in the next few weeks and months this means: keep your eyes open for chocolate snappers.
