Supermarket sales fell in August for the fifth month in a row

Consumption showed no signs of recovery in August. Supermarket sales suffered their fifth consecutive monthly decline and hit a new 2025 low.

As reported by INDEC this Thursday, billing, at constant prices, contracted 0.2% compared to July. In this way, the data for the seasonally adjusted series was the lowest since December of last year.

In year-on-year terms, sales rose 0.3%although it was the smallest positive variation in 2025. The main increases, versus a year ago, were seen in the consumption of clothing, meat and bakery. At the other extreme, in real terms the consumption of electronic products, fruits and vegetables, and cleaning supplies fell sharply.

Regarding payment methods, an increase was only observed in “other payment methods”, which includes, for example, transfer or QR payments; They represented 13.3% of the total and almost equaled the weight of the use of cash, which was the one that fell the most. Card purchases were also behind August 2024.

Consumption: how have sales evolved in wholesalers and shopping malls?

On the other hand, sales in wholesale self-services They climbed 1% monthly and broke a streak of four consecutive falls. However, the level is still near historic lows since records began.

On an annual basis, sales in these establishments dropped 8.4%. The consumption that fell the most here was electronics, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products.

Meanwhile, in shopping malls Consumption suffered a year-on-year decrease of 1.9%. In this segment, real losses in electronics and clothing stood out.
