Expectations for the trade negotiations between China and the USA are high. Trump even expects a deal. Beijing doesn’t go quite that far in advance.
China is confident ahead of the planned trade talks with the USA. President Xi Jinping has emphasized that dialogue and cooperation are the “only right choice” for China and the USA, said Trade Minister Wang Wentao in Beijing.
The first four rounds of economic and trade talks showed that both sides could actually find solutions to each other’s concerns based on mutual respect and equal consultations, he said.
Both sides want to meet in Malaysia next weekend for a fifth round of negotiations. The Chinese delegation will be led by Vice Prime Minister He Lifeng, and on the US side, Finance Minister Scott Bessent will lead the talks. At the same time, the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Countries (Asean) begins in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, to which US President Donald Trump also plans to travel.
From rare earths to chip controls
It was initially not known exactly what both sides would talk about. However, the US is likely to address China’s export controls on rare earths and the halted purchases of US soybeans.
The Chinese, in turn, are affected by US restrictions on the export of important chip technology to China as well as Trump’s threatened tariffs of 100 percent on Chinese imports from November 1st.
A few days later, according to the White House, Trump will meet Xi in South Korea next Thursday (local time). Trump recently expressed confidence that he could reach a trade agreement with Beijing.
