One of the most important providers of sports betting in Germany is changing hands. The new majority owner is hoping for a lot from the business.

The sports betting provider Tipico is changing hands for billions. The financial investor CVC is selling the platform to the French entertainment group Banijay at an enterprise value including debts of 4.6 billion euros, as the companies announced in Paris.

In addition to his own provider Betclic, Banijay wants to significantly expand the sports betting and online gambling business. Together, the companies would be the fourth largest European provider in this area, it said.

According to information, Tipico made 1.3 billion in sales in 2024 as one of the leading providers in Germany and in September took over the Austrian platform Admiral with annual sales of 346 million euros. According to the company’s own information, every second sports bet in Germany is placed at Tipico. Betclic is offered in France, Portugal, Poland and the Ivory Coast and recently had a turnover of 1.4 billion euros per year.

What the new majority owner promises

The acquisition is expected to be completed in mid-2026 and still requires approval from regulatory authorities. Betclic will sell its majority stake in the German sports betting provider Bet-at-Home, it was said.

In addition to the sports betting and gambling business, Banijay primarily operates the production and distribution of TV entertainment content such as “Big Brother” and is also represented at live events. The company expects the takeover to result in cost savings and positive sales effects of 100 million euros in the medium term.

After the takeover, Banijay will initially own almost 65 percent of the company merged from Betclic and Tipico. This proportion should climb to at least 72 percent. CVC is expected to remain a minority shareholder in the medium term. The founders of Tipico are contributing all of their shares to the new company.
