Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov on March 2 commented on the exit from the Nord Stream 2 (SP-2) project of foreign investors, the dissolution of the office of the operating company.
“As for the death of this project, the infrastructure is ready technically, technologically, logistically and so on. This infrastructure will be in place, it will not go anywhere. Common sense and economic feasibility clearly speak of the need to launch this facility as soon as possible,” he said.
The day before, Reuters reported that the operator of NS-2, Nord Stream 2 AG, is considering filing for bankruptcy due to sanctions imposed on Russia by the West in response to Russia’s special operation to protect Donbass.
Agency sources said talks about the company’s potential insolvency are confidential. Currently, according to the interlocutors, Nord Stream 2 AG is working with a financial advisor to pay off some of its obligations and may officially begin bankruptcy proceedings as early as this week.
On February 28, due to the situation in Ukraine, Royal Dutch Shell announced its intention to stop participating in joint projects with Gazprom and withdraw from the SP-2 project, as well as Sakhalin-2 for the production of liquefied natural gas.
The construction of Nord Stream 2 was completed on September 10, 2021. It was built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea for the purpose of direct gas supplies to Europe.
Since 2014, the Kiev authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia. On February 21, the President of the Russian Federation signed a decree recognizing the independence of the republics.
On February 24, Vladimir Putin announced the start of an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. After that, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law throughout Ukraine. He also said that Kyiv is breaking off diplomatic relations with Moscow and withdrawing its diplomats from the embassy.
