Car manufacturer: Porsche interrupts production in Leipzig – BMW in Munich

At Porsche in Leipzig, the wheels stand still for the time being. Parts from western Ukraine are missing. For the time being, short-time work has been requested for the workforce. The production lines at BMW will also stand still.

Due to delivery bottlenecks, Porsche has interrupted the construction of cars at the Leipzig plant. A spokesman in Stuttgart said the factory was forced to suspend production from Wednesday afternoon until the end of next week.

The Macan and Panamera models are built in Leipzig. A total of around 500 vehicles normally roll off the production line every day. Short-time work will be applied for for the 2,500 employees affected.

In Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the Taycan and the 911 are built, production will continue this week, according to the announcement. “The further steps are carried out in an orderly process. In the coming days and weeks we will drive on sight and continuously reassess the situation.” According to information from industry circles, the Volkswagen subsidiary Porsche has so far obtained cable harnesses from western Ukraine.

The Porsche spokesman continued: “The Volkswagen Group looks at the situation in Ukraine with great concern and dismay.” One hopes for a quick cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomacy. “We are convinced that a sustainable solution to the conflict can only be found on the basis of international law.” In all activities on site, the safety and integrity of the people are the top priority.

The Porsche spokesman announced that the effects on business activities would be continuously determined by experts.

Complete production stop at the BMW main plant in Munich

In the BMW plants in Munich, Dingolfing and Steyr, as well as in the Mini plants in Oxford and in the Netherlands, the assembly lines will stand still next week because cable harnesses from the Ukraine are missing. In Leipzig, one of the two shifts is eliminated, as a spokesman for the car company said on Wednesday evening in Munich. In Regensburg, due to a lack of semiconductors, production is also only carried out in one-shift operation.

The production stops and restrictions will initially apply for one week. How it will continue after that is open. Around 7,000 employees are affected at the main plant in Munich. The company spokesman said that it is still being clarified whether they will be on short-time work or whether the forced break will be charged via time accounts.

Wiring system specialist Leoni wants to compensate for Ukraine failures

Meanwhile, the Nuremberg auto parts supplier Leoni wants to try to compensate for the loss of production caused by the closure of two Ukrainian plants. “We are working – in close cooperation with our customers and suppliers – at full speed to control the consequences of the current production interruptions in our two plants in Stryi and Kolomyja, triggered by the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, for everyone involved as best as possible,” said the company company in Nuremberg. Normally 7,000 employees work in the two currently idle plants.
