Streaming service: Spotify closes office in Russia – offer still available

Spotify has closed its office in Russia until further notice due to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine – but the service of the music streaming market leader remains available to the Russians.

Spotify wants to help maintain the global flow of information, a spokesman said, among other things, for the US industry journal Variety.

The Swedish streaming giant also owns a podcast platform. All content of the Russian state media RT and Sputnik had been removed, it said. RT and Sputnik are accused of war propaganda and misinformation in the West. Its distribution has been banned in the EU since Wednesday.

Spotify is considered the world’s number one music streaming business with 406 million users, of which 180 million are paying subscribers. In Russia – and also in Ukraine – Spotify only started in the summer of 2020.
