Armament: Rheinmetall armaments group expects 3,000 new jobs

A first order has already been received, more will follow. Because of the special fund of 100 billion euros for the Bundeswehr, the armaments group Rheinmetall expects up to 3,000 new jobs.

The armaments group Rheinmetall expects to need 1,000 to 3,000 additional employees for new orders from the Bundeswehr rearmament. That said CEO Armin Papperger of the “Wirtschaftswoche”.

The background to this is the federal government’s investment plans. The Düsseldorf-based company received its first order for several thousand new helmets this week.

Investment backlog not yet cleared

Even the increases in the defense budget in recent years have not been able to resolve the investment backlog in armaments projects, said Papperger. A lot of money went into major projects such as the construction of frigates. “The billions that were needed for this were then missing, especially for small and medium-sized projects.”

Under the impression of the war in Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced in the Bundestag on Sunday that 100 billion euros would be made available as a special fund for the Bundeswehr and also more than the two percent of economic output planned by NATO every year to be spent on defense. The Rheinmetall share then jumped in price.

Rheinmetall needs six to twelve months

“It can’t be the case that we can’t defend ourselves after a few days in the event of an attack because the Bundeswehr has run out of ammunition,” said Papperger. The stock of ammunition could be increased significantly within six to twelve months. The manager does not expect that the expansion of production will fail because of the material: Last year, the warehouses were stocked with goods worth around one billion euros, including steel, aluminum and special chips.
