At first the supply of protective masks was sluggish, but they are now available everywhere – and have become a symbol of the pandemic. The Federal Statistical Office has determined figures for imports.
In the corona pandemic, Germany bought billions of protective masks, mainly from China. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 3.8 billion pieces, about FFP2 masks, with a total value of 841.3 million euros were imported into Germany last year.
According to calculations by the Wiesbaden authorities, that was 46 masks per inhabitant. Average cost per mask when importing: 22 cents. Almost 85 percent of these imports came from China: Germany ordered 3.2 billion masks worth 691 million euros from there. The second most important mask supplier was the United Kingdom with 173 million masks worth 56 million euros, followed by Turkey with 159 million masks for 24 million euros.
At the same time, 669 million protective masks from German production with a total value of 285 million euros went abroad, mainly to Austria and Poland.
