The number of beneficiaries of the social gas rate grew 3% in 2021

The report indicated that users with a social rate closed 2021 with a total of 1,077,882 beneficiaries, 3% above the previous year.

Thus, since 2017, the year that the study takes as a reference as the starting point for the decrease in beneficiaries, it went from 1,720,466 users with a social rate, to 1,480,222 in 2018 with a reduction of 14%; and 1,128,638 in 2019 with an accumulated drop of 24%.

In a criticism of the management in the sector during the presidency of Mauricio Macri, Enargas indicated that in the last two years of the Cambiemos government there was “a loss of more than 350,000 beneficiaries, the most intense of the entire series, as a result of the measures arranged by the former Secretary of Government for Energy”.

In 2020, already under the presidency of Alberto Fernández, “although the trend continues to be negative, it loses intensity and a year-on-year variation of 7% is observed”, while in 2021 “the behavior is reversed, increasing by 3% the number of beneficiaries of the registry, reaching a total of 1,077,882,” the report said.

The data provided by Enargas is important in relation to the agreement for rate adjustments in the energy sector signed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in which it was established that the increases for TS beneficiaries may not exceed 40% of the Coefficient Salary Variation of the previous year.

Enargas also specified that “between 2017 and 2021, residential users registered an average growth of 1%, which is below the normal trend of the natural growth rate in the number of users”, from 2% to 3% per year.
