352 experts from all over the world took part in the conference for industrial computed tomography, which was organized this year by the FH Upper Austria site in Wels. X-ray computed tomography for industrial applications has been in operation there for 18 years. In industry, computer tomography is used, for example, to find impurities or cracks inside a workpiece using X-ray methods without having to destroy the object. The research team at the University of Applied Sciences can detect such impurities in the nanometer range.
The conference began as a small German-language conference. This year, researchers from Great Britain, Italy, South Korea, the USA and numerous other countries took part.
In Upper Austria, too, numerous companies have invested in computer tomographs in recent years, says Johann Kastner. According to the head of the CT research group in Wels, the technology is particularly useful in plastics technology, but also in steel production or mechanical engineering.
An important source of employees who have the necessary expertise for the use of such devices is the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. “We are pleased that the Upper Austrian industry is keen to hire the specialists from the Wels University of Applied Sciences campus who are trained in CT. This shows us that we have chosen the right topic and, above all, a promising one,” says Kastner.
