Deutsche Bahn: First train of the “rail bridge” goes to Ukraine

15 containers loaded with sleeping bags, diapers and drinking water left Germany for Ukraine. Deutsche Bahn announces further aid trips – and wants to make job offers for refugees.

A first train of the so-called rail bridge with relief supplies for people in Ukraine left Berlin on Friday night.

The Deutsche Bahn train with 15 containers left the Seddin freight station. He loaded 350 tons of relief supplies – sleeping bags, sleeping mats, diapers, canned food, drinking water, clothing and baby food. Medical products such as syringes, plasters, gauze bandages and cannulas are also on board.

“Today we are starting to help quickly – with what is most needed,” said freight transport board member Sigrid Nikutta. The federal government and the railways announced the rail bridge earlier in the week. In addition to DB Cargo and its Polish subsidiary, the international forwarders DB Schenker and DB Transa as well as the Ukrainian railways are involved.

Donations are collected in Germany with trucks and transported to the Ukraine with container trains. Transport is free for donors.

Bahn wants to make job offers for refugees

“With DB’s rail bridge, we are ensuring that the enormous international willingness to help also reaches the people of Ukraine,” said Schenker boss Jochen Thewes. Collection points at the exhibition centers in Cologne, Hanover and Munich accept individual donations.

“It will not be the last train on this rail bridge, but we will be able to get additional trains going in the next few days, with relief supplies that are needed on site, are urgently needed,” announced Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz ZDF “Morgenmagazin” on.

The railway, which transports refugees from Ukraine free of charge, also wants to approach them with job offers, said Lutz – even if this is not a priority at the moment. In the past two weeks, Deutsche Bahn has organized the largest relief operation in its history, with trains, buses, free tickets, care for refugees in the stations and additional living space.
