War in Ukraine: Agricultural traders: Food is becoming more expensive

Because of the war in Ukraine, many million tons of grain will probably be missing on the world market this year. That’s what agricultural trading group BayWa says.

The agricultural trading group BayWa expects food prices in Germany to rise due to the war in Ukraine.

The manager of the BayWa grain trade, Jörg-Simon Immerz, told the news magazine Focus: “In addition to the price of raw materials, there are other increased manufacturing costs. The consumer will see this in higher food prices – we’re talking about ten, 15 percent and more.”

Bread, rolls and pastries in particular are likely to become more expensive. In the worst case, the Ukraine would fail as a grain supplier this year, and then the world market would be short of more than 40 million tons, said Immerz. That corresponds to the German grain harvest.

According to the Care Deutschland aid association, half of the food distributed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has come from Ukraine. North Africa in particular will feel the failure, Secretary General Karl-Otto Zentel told the “Focus”.
