“The payment order for the repayment of interest on the bonds (…) with a total value of 117.2 million dollars (…) has been carried out”, the Russian Finance Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said it sent the funds to a “foreign bank” on March 14.
The American bank JPMorgan received a payment from the Russian central bank for this purpose, A source close to the matter confirmed to AFP on Thursday, without detailing the amount received.
The firm consulted US authorities to make sure it did not violate sanctions imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and after receiving the green light, sent the money to Citigroup.
JPMorgan was one of the intermediary banks carrying out the transactions on behalf of the Russian central bank, the source said.
Citigroup will distribute the required amounts to the holders of these obligations, in a maximum of 30 days to prevent Russia from being considered in arrears on its foreign debt.
