Learning to understand digitization in all its facets

Digitization is more than just a technological process. For example, the introduction of new organizational software can have far-reaching consequences for the corporate culture, the business model and employee motivation. Numerous preparatory steps must be taken in advance.

In the new “Digital Society” master’s program at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, students will learn to understand all aspects of digitization starting in the fall. The curriculum of the full-time course includes content from computer science, sociology, economics and law. “We follow the JKU’s principle of understanding digitization as a comprehensive process that must be viewed from numerous different perspectives,” says Uli Meyer, who heads the “Digital Society” degree program committee.

A separate curriculum with completely new courses was designed for the course. “In every lecture, every course and every seminar, the students should learn to see problems from the perspectives of different disciplines,” says Meyer. This is also reflected in the composition of the teaching staff: teachers from different disciplines hold many events together.

The master’s program is aimed at students from all sub-areas that are covered in the curriculum, for example at law, sociology or computer science graduates. In everyday study life, the students should develop the necessary skills in project work with interdisciplinary teams in order to work together on problems.

“It starts with the fact that sociologists, for example, have a different vocabulary than economists or computer scientists. But the approaches and methods in the different disciplines also differ,” explains Meyer. “Our students should know these differences and learn to use them productively in collaboration.” (vaba)
