War and energy prices remind Austrians of heating renovation

Most recently, the hotline for the renovation offensive recorded over 2,200 calls in one week – that was a record and as many as in the whole of January 2022, said Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler. However, the funding pot running until 2025 is far from exhausted.

“People want to end their dependence on Russian natural gas. Every gas boiler that we expand is a step towards independence,” said Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens). According to the ministry, there have been almost 40,000 applications and registrations for funding so far. Of these, more than 32,000 were due to switching from oil or gas heating to a more climate-friendly heating system. Since 2022, there have been up to 7,500 euros per project for this.

Apart from the “Get out of oil and gas” subsidy, there is also a special subsidy for low-income households with “Clean heating for everyone”. You get reimbursed up to 100 percent of the cost of a new heater.

Up to 2025, 1.9 billion euros in funding will be available as part of the refurbishment offensive for modern heating systems and the thermal refurbishment of buildings. To date, only EUR 267.5 million of this has been committed, with EUR 221.1 million going to the “Out of Oil and Gas” program and EUR 46.6 million to the “Restructuring Check”.

“It’s particularly important to me that every household can make the switch. The independence of our country affects us all. But it’s clear that not everyone can afford it. That’s why we give them full support for the switch,” promises Gewessler.
