Economy: Relaxation of the Corona rules: Retail is doing more

With the number of infections falling, the corona restrictions for retailers have also been relaxed. The trade in clothing, shoes and leather goods in particular is now skyrocketing.

Germany’s retailers benefited significantly from the relaxation of the corona restrictions in June. Adjusted for price increases, sales rose (real) by 4.2 percent and nominally by 4.6 percent compared to the previous month, according to the Federal Statistical Office.

“This development is likely to be related to the nationwide decline in the corona incidence and the associated relaxation of the federal emergency brake, which was in force until June 30, 2021,” said the Wiesbaden statisticians on Monday.

In April, the federal and state governments put uniform nationwide rules into force when there are high numbers of corona infections. This emergency brake was limited in the Infection Protection Act until June 30th. Depending on the regional development of the corona numbers, there have already been easing. Compared to June 2020, sales rose by 6.2 percent in real terms and by 8.2 percent in nominal terms. However, June 2021 had one more sales day with 26 days.

The retail sector was also up in the first half of the year as a whole: sales were up 1.6 percent in real terms and 3.2 percent in nominal terms compared to the same period in the previous year.

In June, the trade in textiles, clothing, shoes and leather goods, which was particularly affected by store closures, recorded a strong increase in sales of 70.5 percent in real terms compared to the previous month. For the first time, it was above the pre-crisis level of February 2020. Department stores and department stores also benefited from the easing. Sales increased by 34.3 percent compared to the previous month. In contrast, the Internet and mail order business, which boomed during the store closings, recorded a drop in sales of 7.5 percent in June.
