Almost 60 percent profit at a time when the international stock markets were shaken by the pandemic, the Ukraine war and inflation. The Viennese pensioner Elisabeth Heiss managed this feat.
Her secret: Shares in Chinese companies listed on the US stock exchanges have meanwhile been able to achieve significant price gains and Heiss bought exactly these shares at the game. “I started with Austrian stocks, which then immediately lost 20 percent,” says Heiss in the OÖN interview.
She then sold it and focused entirely on Chinese stocks. She was advised by her son. “But it was my decision. There’s also a good deal of luck involved,” says Heiss.
She does not hold any shares privately. “I don’t have the money for that. I was a saleswoman, so you didn’t earn that much,” says Heiss. She does not yet know what she will do with the car she won in the game. Her granddaughter has a good chance of getting the Citroen C3. “They would certainly be happy.” But she would like to take delivery of the car herself. “If the pandemic allows it, I would like to come to Linz,” says the 77-year-old.
It was also Chinese stocks that decided the class ranking in favor of the 4BHET of the Linz Technikum HTL Paul-Hahn-Straße. Initial gains would then have awakened the ambition of the students, says Anja Weiermann, who teaches the subject “Economics and Law” at the school and supervised the winning class.
The stock exchange game was almost something like a school championship in Linz’s Technikum. The first five places were taken by classes from Paul-Hahn-Strasse. The game offers the opportunity to explain the economic context in the classroom. “Ethical issues are also part of it this year,” says Weiermann, alluding to the cruel war in Ukraine and the reactions of the stock exchanges to it. The winner of the student classification, Marvin Hödlmoser from St. Gilgen, also saw his chance here. “I just put everything on one card when the Chinese market came under pressure.” The 18-year-old took part in the OÖN stock exchange game for the second time. He can look forward to an iPhone.

After Marvin Hödlmoser and his class did well in the OÖN stock market game last school year, the 18-year-old student at HAK Bad Ischl tried his luck this year on his own. And with success: By observing Russia-China trade relations, the 18-year-old secured the prize with shares in Chinese companies.
