Collective bargaining agreement: no warning strikes: more money for airport security

Travelers can breathe a sigh of relief: According to the Verdi union, there is a collective bargaining agreement with the employers for private security staff at airports.

Shortly before Easter travel, the trade union and employers agreed on new tariff regulations for private security staff at German airports. Further warning strikes around Easter have been averted, as the Verdi union announced.

The breakthrough came in the sixth round of negotiations, after the talks had only been broken off again on Friday without a result. The Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) confirmed the agreement on Monday. The employers did not initially provide any details on the details. The BDLS is currently still negotiating with the civil servants’ association DBB, among others. Here, however, the agreement should be adopted in the near future.

Important point: Equalization of East and West

According to Verdi, a three-stage wage increase was agreed for a period of 24 months, which differs for the individual wage groups. Accordingly, the pay increase for the current year is between 4.4 and 7.8 percent. The other levels depend, among other things, on the wage group and also the region. By January 1, 2024, the adjustment of wages between East and West should be completed.

“The employers have finally submitted an acceptable offer,” said Verdi negotiator Wolfgang Pieper on Monday afternoon. “With this collective bargaining agreement, it is possible to make the wage conditions in the aviation security industry and the work more attractive despite unfavorable working hours and numerous operational problems.”

High participation in warning strikes helped

Verdi had originally demanded that the approximately 25,000 employees increase the hourly wage by at least one euro for a period of only twelve months. In addition, there should be nationwide adjustments at the highest regional level from Baden-Württemberg as well as standardized tariff groups. The employers had recently proposed increases in four stages for a longer term.

With several warning strikes by the security staff at the airports, Verdi had repeatedly brought travel to a standstill at the respective locations in the past few weeks. “The large participation in the warning strikes in recent weeks has strengthened us in the negotiations and made it clear to employers that they had to take a real step towards the employees,” it said.
