How much does an employee have to earn to cover the average rent payment?

Based on the analysis of the gross salaries claimed on the job portal, the average salary claimed for February is $110,700. With this data in mind, if the average rent of a two-room apartment in the City of Buenos Aires of $50,891 is taken as a reference, it is concluded that this means half a month’s salary. Of course, the account varies according to the type of home and its location. For example, to cover the average rent of GBA North valued at $54,498, one must work 15 days to pay it, while for the average rent of $37,093 per month in GBA West-South, only 10 days are required.

If these figures are compared with those of the past, a recovery in real wages could be interpreted. While now it takes 13.79 days, in February 2021 it took 15 days, and two years ago -before the pandemic- it was 10 days.

Positions, gender and location

These variables would change if wages were higher. They vary according to the experience, the hierarchy of the position and the seniority of the employee in the company. Junior applicants, that is, those who have little experience or continue with their studies in progress, seek a job with a salary of $77,046. For them, the average rent in CABA means 66% of their salary and they must work 20 days to cover it.

One step higher are the semi-senior and senior positions. Those with more than three years of experience, people in charge and sometimes even leading teams, have a salary requirement of $110,554. That is, the rent represents 46% of their salary and they must use 14 days of their work to cover it exclusively.

The best scenario is that of the bosses or supervisors, who have teams under their responsibility and managerial positions. The average salary that they want is $172,034, so they have to dedicate 10 days of their work to allocate the income to rent, which in turn represents 29.6% of the total salary.

However, the amount of the rent does not depend exclusively on the position but also, unfortunately, on the gender. Despite the fact that many companies establish parity in salaries, there are still differences between the claims of men and women: they claim $103,849 while they claim 19% more, that is, $128,435. Under the example of a 50 m² apartment in CABA, the monthly rent would represent 49% of the salary for women while the percentage decreases to 39.6% for men. So, a couple that has these two salaries and combines them to rent an apartment of these dimensions in the City, would allocate 21.9% of their income together.

On the other hand, the great extension of the country shows a difference in prices when it comes to rentals. In Córdoba, for example, renting a two-room unit costs $24,630 and in Rosario, the 50 m² apartments are asking for $29,250, which in the City of Buenos Aires is not even found for a studio apartment since its average current rent is $38,000.
