A global food shortage is looming as a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine. Greenpeace is therefore calling for a ban on biofuel – the rapeseed oil required for this is used elsewhere.
The environmental organization Greenpeace is calling on the federal government to ban biofuel by ordinance in view of the threatening global food shortage.
“Fresh oil such as rapeseed, soybean or palm oil does not belong in the tank, but on the dining table,” said Greenpeace agriculture expert Martin Hofstetter, the newspapers of the Funke media group. In addition, significantly less grain should be used as animal feed, but rather as food.
In Germany, twelve liters of rapeseed oil end up in car fuel per capita and year. “12 liters of rapeseed oil would easily be enough for everyone to live on for a year,” calculates Hofstetter. “And that could also be used to supply other people if exports of sunflower oil from Ukraine were to stop.”
According to Greenpeace, Europe could also completely replace the missing grain exports from Ukraine this year if grain were used more as food instead of animal feed. “If we had ten percent fewer animals in Europe, we would automatically have enough wheat at our disposal to replace all of Ukraine’s grain export losses,” said Hofstetter. “The EU produces 160 million tons of grain that is used as animal feed. 10 percent of this is 16 million tons – that’s exactly how much grain Ukraine is currently exporting to the world.”
