The new airport now has a direct connection to New York. A detour via Frankfurt or Munich will no longer be necessary for passengers to and from Berlin.
Straight to New York – since Monday this has also been possible again for passengers from Berlin and Brandenburg. United Airlines has started its non-stop service to Newark Airport.
Every day a plane takes off and lands at BER Airport in Schönefeld from overseas. “The two mega-cities of Berlin and New York are connected,” said the airline. United works together with Lufthansa: The flights can also be booked via the German airline.
First flight took off on Monday morning
It is the first long-distance connection from BER to the USA. There are also direct connections from Schönefeld to Singapore, Doha and, in winter, to Dubai. The Boeing 767 was said goodbye in the morning with water fountains from the airport fire brigade. The Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) and Berlin’s Economics Senator Stephan Schwarz (independent) were there.
Politics and companies in the region have been calling for more long-haul routes for the new airport for years. Even at the former Tegel Airport there was only a one-digit number. In most cases, passengers from Berlin and Brandenburg have to change trains at hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich for longer connections.
