Compared to the previous week, this corresponds to a minus of 1,552 people, the Ministry of Labor announced on Tuesday. 163,809 people are currently pre-registered for short-time work, which also means a slight decrease in weekly intervals. Vienna. Unemployment at the end of March was thus well below the level of previous years. At the end of March 2021, 124,247 more people were unemployed or in training. Compared to 2020, during the first nationwide lockdown, the number of unemployed fell by 213,600 people. In the pre-crisis year of 2019, there were 34,790 fewer people in employment than today.
The downward trend is also continuing in the pre-registrations for short-time work. Compared to the previous week, pre-registrations fell by 2,673 to 163,809. “This means that the pre-registrations for short-time work remain at a constant level. Corona short-time work will expire as announced at the end of March, but the general short-time work model will remain in place,” said Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) in a broadcast on Tuesday.
Kocher attributed the ongoing positive development on the labor market to seasonal effects. In the near future, however, a damper is to be expected due to the situation in Ukraine. “In view of the geopolitical upheavals in connection with the war in Ukraine, however, it can at least be assumed that the currently positive economic momentum will slow down and, as a result, the unemployment figures will at least decrease more slowly,” explained the minister.
