This week’s Agriculture Ministers’ Conference is all about the war in Ukraine. One of the issues at issue is how global food security can be guaranteed.
This week’s conference of federal and state agriculture ministers will deal with the effects of the Ukraine war on agriculture.
“This topic with all its consequences will certainly dominate the conference of agriculture ministers,” said the chairman of the conference, Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister of Agriculture Sven Schulze (CDU). On Wednesday and Thursday, the heads of department will first meet for preliminary meetings before the agriculture ministers will discuss the agricultural policy course in a video link from Thursday afternoon.
Due to the war, there is currently concern that global food security is not guaranteed. Above all, the use of fallow land for agriculture will therefore be an important issue. The EU Commission had cleared the way for temporary management. According to reports, the federal and state agricultural ministers disagree about the implementation of the proposal.
Union: Open Ecological Focus Areas
Bavaria’s Minister of Agriculture Michaela Kaniber accused Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens) of blocking urgently needed additional cultivation areas. “Not using areas, even though many people in some regions of the world can no longer afford the increasingly expensive food or even face famine, is an ethical declaration of bankruptcy,” said the CSU politician to the “Augsburger Allgemeine”. She called on Özdemir to create a legal basis for the use of fallow cultivated land as quickly as possible at the ministerial conference.
According to Kaniber, there are around 170,000 hectares of agricultural land in Germany that are currently fallow as ecological priority areas: “Using them temporarily can save lives and is environmentally compatible.”
With a view to the Common European Agricultural Policy (CAP), questions will have to be clarified at the ministerial meeting on how to deal with specifications from Brussels. Environmental and climate protection measures are always a challenge for many farmers.
