High inflation and rising prices are an ongoing issue in all EU countries. This led to nationwide strikes in Greece.
A 24-hour strike in Greece paralyzed many areas of public life on Wednesday in protest against the price increases of the past few months.
Ferries stayed in ports, cutting off many islands from the mainland. Local public transport in the big cities was also on strike for 24 hours. In addition, all government employees went on strike, as the unions announced. Air traffic, on the other hand, took place without any problems – a court had forbidden the air traffic controllers to go on strike the day before.
Around noon, thousands of people demonstrated on the streets of Athens and Thessaloniki. The rallies were initially largely quiet, as Greek media reported. The trade union umbrella organizations in the public and private sectors (Adedy and GSEE) had called for the strikes under the motto “The wages are not enough, the bills cannot be paid”. Numerous participants also condemned the war in Ukraine on their banners – the causes of the conflict were “imperialist”, they argued.
