45,338 employees currently work for the Rewe Austria Group (Billa, Bipa, Penny, Adeg and Rewe Austria Touristik). And although the number of employees increased by 200 last year, the retail group is urgently looking for employees. 3,000 vacancies are to be filled, and 600 young people can start an apprenticeship immediately. A total of 800 apprentices are to be taken on this year.
In Austria, sales increased by 1.54 percent to 9.21 billion in the previous year, with growth in the comparatively small tourism sector at 44.25 percent being the biggest plus after business in 2020 had collapsed by 73 percent compared to 2019. “After the Corona exceptional year, we were able to grow again and have exceeded our expectations,” says Rewe board member Marcel Haraszti.
The aim remains to become number one in the food trade. The brands Billa and Merkur have also been combined under the umbrella brand Billa and now operate 1270 branches throughout Austria. The drugstore chain Bipa increased by almost three percent, while the discount brand had to cope with a minus of 2.69 percent in the competitive discount market.
In the international trading business, sales increased by 1.98 percent to 18.41 billion euros. This despite the fact that the Russian business had been closed. Rewe International is active in nine EU countries with Billa, Bipa and Adeg, Penny operates as a typical discounter in five countries, with Romania developing best in a country comparison. The Rewe Group wants to invest a total of one billion euros for the expansion in the nine stores.
