Extra health insurance for abroad should not be missing on any trip – and it is not expensive at all. “financial test” has determined the best tariffs, most of them also pay for Covid diseases.
The wanderlust is likely to be great for many after two Corona years. Holidays abroad are also largely possible again, even long-distance trips to Australia or the USA are possible. What should not be missing in your luggage is international health insurance. “financial test” has compared current tariffs and found many recommended offers at reasonable prices.
Most of the 97 tariffs in the test were average “very good” or at least “Good” off, only a few were worse. There are very good tariffs for singles from as little as 8 euros per year, policies for the whole family cost a little more. As a rule, the contracts are renewed year after year if they are not terminated.
The Finanztest experts recommend foreign health insurance for every trip. Within the EU, you can also show your health insurance card to the doctor or hospital. With it, you can be treated under the same conditions as the locals in all 27 EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. However, free treatment is not guaranteed. It is often only after the trip that you find out what the health insurance company will reimburse.
Very good international health insurance from 8 euros
Outside of Europe, the health insurance does not pay anything anyway. And even in the rare but particularly expensive case that a return transport is necessary, the insurance company does not pay. Without the appropriate protection abroad, the return transport from Austria can cost over 1000 euros – an ambulance flight from Thailand or Australia can cost a six-figure sum.
To exclude these risks, you only have to decide on one of the numerous very good offers. The cheapest, very good singles tariff in the test is offered by the Axa for just 7.92 euros a year. Older people sometimes have to pay more, according to the test they are the cheapest with the very good Debeka tariff for 8 euros per person. The Munich club offers the cheapest, very good rate for young families for 18.60 euros.
This and other individually taken out travel health insurance policies usually offer more benefits than policies that are taken out in the course of booking a trip or come as an add-on to the credit card. For trips longer than eight weeks, you usually need a more expensive long-term tariff.
Who pays for Corona?
What if Corona catches me abroad? Almost all providers in the comparison pay without restrictions even with a Covid disease, including the test winners. Some tariffs afford but noisy “financial test” not in the event of a pandemic or if there is a travel warning from the Federal Foreign Office for the holiday destination. A closer look at the contract terms is helpful here.
Also to note: International health insurance does not pay for an alternative return flight if you unexpectedly have to go into quarantine. For additional accommodation and return flight costs, you need travel cancellation or travel interruption insurance with quarantine protection.
