Faced with this situation, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Julián Domínguez, reaffirmed that “there will be no increase in retentions for the next two years.” He did so by participating in the inauguration of the Technological Development Center that the multinational BASF built in the Buenos Aires town of Rojas.
“The withholdings are not going to go up,” repeated Domínguez. When asked about possible new economic measures, he expressed that “the producer has to have the peace of mind that there will be no increase in withholdings, as I promised from the beginning. The world needs us to exceed 25 million tons of wheat, which would be a great contribution to the humanitarian challenge we have. We need to work calmly and leave the producer out of these discussions that only generate uncertainty. The Argentine producer is not a price maker”.
The minister explained that “it is important that all of Argentina knows that those who work the land run all the risks, that the producer did not capture the international prices of the war because he sold at prices prior to the conflict and also now must pay more expensive fertilizers” . The statements suggest that by not being able to capture the international prices of the war, the producers would not be part of the “extraordinary income”.
The differences in the Government are not new and are exposed every time a solution to economic problems needs to be found. Beyond Domínguez’s arguments, Guzmán spoke out against the withholdings, contrary to the Secretary of Domestic Trade, Roberto Feletti, who repeatedly asked to increase export duties for various agribusiness products.
Asked about the different views on this issue in the Government, Domínguez stressed that “not all officials have to know what happens with the producer, how the land is worked and who were the agents of change that Argentina has with greater production. I understand that different members of the community have free opinions on something in particular, I, who am in charge of the agricultural portfolio at the request of the President, ratify what is a political decision from the first day we assume: it will not affect the producer ” .
