Germany start: Amazon announces free streaming service

Amazon’s free streaming service IMDb TV is already available in the US and UK. Soon it will be in Germany as well.

The US giant Amazon plans to launch a free streaming service in Germany this year. So far, there is already the paid streaming offer Prime Video.

The free streaming service IMDb TV already exists in the USA and Great Britain and will also start in Germany later this year, as Amazon announced on Wednesday. On April 27, IMDb TV will also be rebranded to Amazon Freevee. The trade journal “W&V” had previously reported on it.

The service is financed by advertising revenue. Amazon Freevee Head, Ashraf Alkarmi, said: “Customers are increasingly turning to streaming premium ad-supported content and we built Amazon Freevee to bring them the content they want with limited ads.” The range of exclusive series and film formats (originals) on Amazon Freevee is to be significantly expanded over the course of the year.

In Germany, numerous national and international providers are competing for streaming customers. In addition to international giants such as Netflix, Disney, Apple and Amazon, broadcasting groups such as RTL Germany and ProSiebenSat.1 also have their own streaming platforms, as do the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF.
