To lower prices, the UTT will open a warehouse for small producers in the Central Market

The site for small producers from different parts of the country is an initiative that the management of the UTT is carrying out at the head of the concentrator market (MCBA) and that it had been promoting for months.

“We are also happy,” they stressed, “because this inauguration takes place within the framework of the commemoration of the International Day of Peasant Struggle,” which is celebrated worldwide every April 17.

From the UTT they highlighted that the objective of the initiative “is that the producing families have access to the possibility of direct sales in a large fruit and vegetable concentrator and distributor space such as the Central Market, so that in this way they are included in an equitable manner in this marketing chain”.

“In the beginning – advanced its leaders – it will start with stallholders from the green belt of the province of Buenos Aires and the province of Mendoza, with the sale of approximately 2,200 packages of leafy vegetables, tomatoes and fruit.”

Nahuel Levaggi, president of the Central Market and national coordinator of the UTT, said: “After so long, we managed to open a space for small and medium-sized producers so that they can market their fruit and vegetable products within the Market premises without intermediaries. For our union and for history of the Central, this is a historic step that contributes to finding solutions for both producers and the agri-food system of our country”.

The first producer organizations that are already part of this initiative are the Association of Sharecroppers and Allied Workers (ASOMA), the Evita Agrarian Front, the National Indigenous Peasant Movement (MNCI-Somos Tierra) and the Union of Workers of the Land (UTT). ).

Celia Mayorga, cooperative producer from Mendoza and spokesperson for the UST/MNCI-ST stressed: “What we are doing is a light of hope, having our production there, without intermediaries, is a great achievement, it gives a lot of room to grow in a moment complex with many climatic difficulties lately in our territories and economic crisis”.

We want to bring our agroecological foods closer to many more people and advance awareness of healthy production“, he remarked.

For his part, Roberto Solano, vice president of ASOMA, predicted: “For small producers, this new warehouse is going to help us a lot in marketing, we are not going to solve all the problems in the sector, but we are going to be able to improve the sale prices of our products, removing the costs of transportation and logistics.”

“Improving the quality of life of those who produce and improving the quality of food for the people is the way forward. Today, this step is moving towards commercial equity, which is added to the rest of the initiatives carried out by the Central Market and the organizations of producers and food producers”, they finally highlighted from the UTT.
