According to “Standard” and “Handelsblatt”, current and former tutors are making serious allegations against the online platform. GoStudent denies the allegations. An online petition started in January calls for better working conditions at the online tutoring company. To date, 377 people have supported the petition. GoStudent has over 19,000 freelance tutors in 23 countries worldwide. The petition contains 11 demands, including punctual and better payment, timely processing of terminations, technical improvements and availability of support.
“We get 13 euros for 50 minutes. Bonuses are only paid out every six months to force people to stay,” said a tutor to “Standard”. There is also criticism of the no-show rule. “If an hour is lost, the customer has to pay for the whole hour, but tutors only get 7.50 euros.” However, failures are often due to the technical infrastructure, coupled with the lack of availability of the support team, according to the tutor.
GoStudent replied to the “standard” that tutors offer their services independently via the platform, one acts as an intermediary, the salary comes from the customer. There is a payout period of five days to respond to adjustments and coordinate international payout processes.
The flagship start-up has so far collected almost EUR 600 million from investors and was most recently valued at EUR 3 billion. No other start-up in Austria has a higher rating. In March, GoStudent announced a major US expansion and opened a location in Rome in April.
