IMF Spring Meeting: Activist Malala: Invest more in girls’ education

The education of girls is an investment in the future for countries, emphasized IMF boss Georgieva at the spring conference. Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai is also campaigning for equality for women.

At the start of the spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, IMF boss Kristalina Georgieva and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai called for more investment in girls’ education.

“If we want to get the economy back on track, we have to make the right investments,” Georgieva said in Washington on Monday. Educating girls is not an expense, it is an investment in a country’s future.

Her message to finance ministers from all over the world is simple, said the head of the IMF: “If you want growth to be higher, if you want your household income to increase, then please educate girls and empower women.” No country can be successful unless it taps the full potential of all people – men and women.

Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai joined the event via video and also urged increasing funding for girls’ education and promoting equality for women in society. This contributes to a country’s economic performance, helps to combat poverty and contain conflicts. Yousafzai (24) was the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for her commitment to the right of all children to an education.

Finance ministers, central bankers and representatives of the financial sector and development cooperation are traveling from all over the world to the US capital for the spring meeting of the IMF and World Bank. Some of the consultations are taking place online because of the pandemic.
