War in Ukraine: Netherlands: No more gas from Russia at the end of the year

The Dutch government has committed – no more Russian natural gas and oil. The Hague now wants to make delivery agreements with other countries as soon as possible.

The Netherlands no longer wants to import natural gas or oil from Russia by the end of the year. The government announced that energy dependency should be reduced as quickly as possible.

All gas storage tanks should be filled as much as possible before winter. At present, about 15 percent of the total demand for gas from Russia is met.

The government now wants to make supply agreements with other countries as soon as possible. In addition, significantly more liquid gas is to be imported. An LNG terminal in Rotterdam is to be expanded and a new floating terminal is to be built in Eemshaven in the north of the country on the German border. In addition, the government is using energy-saving measures to reduce demand.

Last year, the Russian company Gazprom had insufficiently stocked up. “Of course we all suspect that Russia didn’t do that because of Europe’s dependence on gas and the planned war in Ukraine,” said Energy Secretary Rob Jetten.
