Argentina and Israel advance in plan for the use of irrigation, biotechnology and food certification

During the meeting, which was attended by the Israeli ambassador to Argentina, Galit Ronen, Domínguez presented the National Sustainable Irrigation Plan which “seeks to increase production, generate more value added, expand exports, improve yields and optimize water use.”

“In Argentina there are around 2 million hectares under irrigation, which produces 13% of the country’s agricultural product. We have great potential for improvement since only 5% of the cultivated area is under irrigation,” Domínguez remarked.

The official part emphasizes that “currently, the first stage of the National Sustainable Irrigation Plan has begun to be executed. In this section, some 1.4 billion dollars will be invested among the 21 projects that are being deployed in the 12 provinces, with a potential of irrigation of 340 thousand hectares and an area of ​​influence of 1 million productive hectares. The initiative contemplates the productive strengthening of 119 zones throughout the country.”

Domínguez highlighted the importance of the agreement that will allow our country to export some 30,000 tons of fresh or refrigerated beef annually to Israel free of tariffs and affirmed that it is “a stability mechanism for bilateral trade that will provide predictability to producers and the industry in a strategic market for our meat exports”.

“Historical, cultural and cooperation ties unite us and we want to consolidate Argentina as a reliable supplier to the Israeli market of food products of the highest quality and safety,” added Domínguez.

The head of the rural portfolio referred to our country’s goal of reaching 200 million tons of cereals and oilseeds by 2030 and ratified Argentina’s commitment “to be part of the solution to global food security since our agriculture and livestock is part of the solution to the problems of food insecurity and the environmental and climatic challenges that the world presents to us”.

The ministers agreed that the technical teams of both portfolios work on a bilateral agenda to promote exchange in biotechnology and genetics.

Total exports from Argentina to Israel during 2021 rose to US$366 million, which represented a 27% increase compared to the previous year and marked a record figure in relation to bilateral trade in recent years. 99.7% of these exports corresponded to the agro-bioindustrial sector.
