The industry affirms that job creation is beginning to plateau

After the improvement that has been taking place so far, companies began to take their foot off the accelerator, and slowly everything began to focus on specific searches.

“So far we have come with the rebound. Now we have the picture from before the pandemic again, with specific and segmented searches. Everything is beginning to be more cautious and prudent,” explained Matías Ghidini, director of the Human Resources consultancy Ghidini Rodil.

The momentum that the labor market had been showing until now had to do, above all, with how black 2020 turned out as a result of the pandemic.

Thus, once some activities were revived, the incorporation of workers became increasingly necessary.

In fact, according to the latest data from the Argentine Integrated Social Security System (SIPA), this trend was seen at the start of this year.

These records show that registered salaried employment grew by 0.5% during January and more than 200,000 jobs were created in the last 12 months.

This means that 29,000 people entered registered employment.

In addition, the number of registered employees in the private sector was 0.9% higher in relation to the situation in February 2020 (51,000 more jobs) in the run-up to the pandemic in Argentina.

The University of San Martín (Unsam) also shows the route that the creation of positions brings.

Through its Center for Training and Studies on Work and Development, the entity maintains that in the last two years it was higher in the private sector than in the public sector, and that the new jobs in a dependency relationship more than doubled the new ones. monotributists.

“At the end of 2021, the labor market recovery process was consolidated. The number of employed persons reached 19.9 million throughout the country. The figure represents an increase of 1.6 million compared to 2020,” the work indicated. academic.

He specified that “the growth of the employed population between the fourth quarters of 2019 and 2021 was explained by the expansion of registered salaried employment (which increased by 750,000 people)”.

These movements – they warn both in companies and in consultancies – are beginning to slow down.

The positions that should have been filled after the pandemic and before the reopening of different activities have already been covered, so now there are particular cases.

“In 2021 there was a strong reactivation and there was a rebound in almost all sectors because we were coming from a strong blow from the pandemic. Now we see that it is beginning to plateau, except in those sectors that continue to generate private employment and quality such as technology or the agribusiness,” Ghidini said.

Today you can see some continuity in this trend, although at a slower rate, which is why both companies and consultants say that “it is beginning to fade”.

Until when can a positive trend still be seen, beyond that plateauing that is being talked about? In the industry they understand that by the second half of this year all momentum would have been lost.

In between, the fight over wages also plays a central role.

With inflation that many analysts estimate to be very close to 60% by 2022, salary negotiations – at least the most important ones – are unlikely to fall below 50%.

Although this figure is necessary for the workers so as not to continue losing purchasing power, it also complicates the finances of several companies, so that at the same time the decisions to expand the workforce are shrinking.

In fact, today they are trying to close figures close to 49% with non-agreement personnel, which would imply a loss of close to 11 percentage points against inflation.

All this led – according to a survey of the Argentine Institute of Fiscal Analysis (Iaraf) to the fact that in the last four years the salaries of the registered private sector lost against inflation in 30 months, which is equivalent to 63%, while those of the public sector fell in 33 months (69%) and those of the unregistered private sector in 34 months (71%).

As for the negotiations with the unions, it is beginning to be observed that more installments of salary revisions are scheduled, so this year there are more companies that accept three annual ones instead of two.

Although these agreements are sectoral and must be complied with by the firms, within those same segments there are companies that do not have the back to carry them out and, in addition, add personnel.

In the same way, this means that, in order to mitigate this situation, cases of distortions in the hiring of workers are beginning to be seen, such as black payments, incorporation of personnel outside the agreement or use of overtime as a payment tool.
