Services: Deutsche Post: Parcel volume will soon increase again

Business was booming during the pandemic. Recently, however, the parcel volume has fallen sharply. Nevertheless, Swiss Post is optimistic: Parcel volumes should increase again, regardless of Corona.

After a severe drop in parcel volume in the first quarter, Deutsche Post DHL expects the volume of shipments to increase again soon.

In the first half of the year, you are running “against very, very high comparative values from the first half of 2021, so that we are currently going through a normalization phase,” said Post CFO Melanie Kreis on Friday in Bonn at the logistics group’s annual general meeting. After this normalization of the number of parcels sent to consumers, it is assumed that there will be “structural dynamic growth again, as we saw before the Covid pandemic”.

At the beginning of last year, the parcel volumes were very high because people were ordering far more online than before due to corona measures. For Deutsche Post DHL it was a kind of boom – business was booming.

But this phase is over in the parcel business for the time being. The Post recently reported that it transported 19 percent fewer parcels in Germany in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year. However, the company emphasizes that this decline was in line with expectations. Other areas of the group developed very positively, so that the first quarter of the year went well overall.

Manager Kreis confirmed at the shareholders’ meeting that the group was sticking to its previous goals. As in the previous year, an operating result of around eight billion euros is expected for the current financial year. In 2024, this annual figure should be 8.5 billion euros.
