The Corona crisis has long caused empty long-distance trains. Now the trend in bookings has apparently turned.
People are now getting on the train more often to travel abroad. “In international travel, we are currently exceeding the bookings from spring 2019,” said rail boss Richard Lutz on Sunday.
“That was the record year in passenger transport before the pandemic.” In March, eleven percent and in April almost 25 percent more people were traveling in international long-distance transport with trains from Deutsche Bahn or their cooperation partners from abroad than in 2019, it said.
The demand for trips to Austria was particularly high. Almost 60 percent more travelers went there in April than in the same month of 2019. The number of travelers to Belgium also exceeded the pre-crisis level “by almost 40 percent”.
According to its own statements, long-distance rail traffic makes around 13 percent of its sales on international routes. The railway usually cooperates with foreign railway companies. “In German-French high-speed traffic, for example, ICE and TGV are used together,” the group said. There are German and French train attendants on board for the entire journey. With ICE traffic to Switzerland, on the other hand, the staff change at the border.
