Production has already started. Authorities are now checking whether all state requirements have been met at the new Tesla factory in Grünheide. What if not?
At the new Tesla factory just outside of Berlin, the responsible Brandenburg authorities have been checking since Monday whether the state requirements have been met during construction and operation.
The plant in Grünheide has officially been producing electric cars since March 22nd. The so-called initial revision will now follow until May 20th – according to the Ministry of the Environment, a normal step after a factory has been commissioned.
If the conditions imposed during the approval are not or not fully met, the competent authority is said to set additional deadlines. If conditions are still open after that, there could be coercive measures. A ban on the operation can only be considered if immediate dangers are caused.
Still reservations
Environmentalists and local residents still have reservations about the car factory, mainly because of the consumption and possible pollution of groundwater. Before the start of production, not all of the specifications from the state’s environmental permit had been implemented. According to official information, this can happen gradually. However, the requirements for safe operation without immediate danger to the general public and the environment have been met, it said.
The Brandenburg Green League is demanding that the operating permit be banned from the Oder-Spree district due to ambiguities after the leaking of a water-polluting liquid. According to the authorities, 15,000 liters of a paint mixture leaked out in the paint shop in April. When loading the pumped-out liquid, two to three liters ran onto the driveway and were tied up. The liquid is considered slightly hazardous to water. According to the district, it did not get into the sewage system or groundwater. The Strausberg-Erkner water association sees this as a failure, but the Ministry of the Environment does not.
