Shortage of skilled workers: DGB: Training market suffers from structural problems

Despite slight improvements, the new vocational training report does not bode well: Thousands of training positions remain vacant. According to the DGB, individual advisory measures are particularly in demand.

The German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) sees no reason to give the all-clear on the training market.

“Even if it looks like a slight recovery at first glance – the training market continues to suffer from the consequences of Corona and structural problems,” said the deputy DGB chairwoman, Elke Hannack, the German press agency. The number of new training contracts is still well below the level before Corona. Every training place must be fought for so that recovery does not remain a flash in the pan. “If you want skilled workers, you also have to train them.”

The Federal Cabinet today approved this year’s vocational training report, which describes the situation on the training market at the beginning of the current training year with a deadline of September 30, 2021. According to this, a total of 473,100 new training contracts were concluded in 2021 – 5,600 more than in 2020, but still 52,000 fewer than before the Corona pandemic in 2019. The number of places on offer also increased by 8,800 to 536,200, but was also below the pre-Corona level. A permanent problem remains that on the one hand thousands of vacancies remain unfilled and at the same time many interested parties remain unplaced.

A lot of potential is still being wasted at the transition between school and training, said Hannack. “The aim must be to support young people individually in their search for an apprenticeship. Improved careers orientation at general education schools is particularly important for this. Schools, employment agencies and chambers must work together better here.”
