Invented cryptocurrency: Worldwide manhunt for alleged Onecoin inventor

Investors around the world have invested huge sums in a supposed cryptocurrency – and ended up falling for a scammer. The authorities are looking for the woman and at the same time warn against her.

In the multi-billion dollar investment fraud with the fictitious cryptocurrency Onecoin, the authorities are now searching worldwide for the alleged inventor.

Ruja Ingatova, who has a doctorate in law, is accused of joint fraud in particularly serious cases and money laundering, the Bielefeld public prosecutor’s office and the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office reported on Wednesday.

“The wanted person is suspected of being the driving force and intellectual inventor of the supposed cryptocurrency Onecoin, prompting investors worldwide to invest in this actually worthless “currency”,” the authorities reported. The fraud damage determined so far in the process is just over 88 million euros. However, the damage actually caused worldwide should amount to several billion dollars, as reported by the Federal Criminal Police Office.

Born in Bulgaria in 1980, the German national has been in hiding since October 2017. According to the police, she should have considerable financial resources and supporters and contacts worldwide due to her actions. She may have changed her appearance.

In addition to the already existing national and European arrest warrants, the worldwide public search is now also being opened. The accused will also be on the list of the most wanted fugitives in Europe.

A reward of €5,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the accused. However, police warned against approaching the woman herself as she may be armed.
