Alberto Fernández assured that Europe’s protectionism hinders the free trade agreement with Mercosur

“What I think we really need to discuss is also to see how we act against the protectionism of certain sectors of the European economy, which I think is really what makes the agreement the most difficult,” the president said in Berlin, during a conference of joint press with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

A trade deal needs the backing of the European Parliament and EU members to enter into force, but not everyone is convinced. The German chancellor confirmed that there are some issues of concern.

“The agreement is important and there are some questions that concern us about environmental standards, about social standards, but in the end it is about making it a success,” Scholz said at the press conference.

Fernández acknowledged that the agreements were frustrated by the environmental debates, but said that they were also hindered by the protectionism of some European sectors and by economic asymmetries.

“And secondly, the economic asymmetries that exist between Europe and Latin America, which with the pandemic and with this war continue to deepen,” affirmed the Argentine president, who on Tuesday began a brief tour of Europe, where he held a meeting with Spanish authorities.

After his visit to Germany, Fernández will hold a meeting on Friday with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, with whom he will also address this issue.
