The trade union center affirmed that “operators must be required to comply with a demanding project approval process to guarantee that caring for the environment is a priority”, for which the public hearing is now joined by “a participatory process and open to the public so that they can learn about the projects and give their opinion on their potential impacts”.
“This type of mechanism is a novelty for the industry and allows compliance with the international agreements to which the country adheres in environmental matters,” the document considered.
In this framework, the CGT stated that “we must take advantage of the opportunity that the country has to achieve energy sovereignty and contribute to decarbonizing the world’s economies within the framework of energy transitions.”
In 2019, the National State awarded 18 exploratory areas to nine consortiums of companies that committed investments for a total of US$724 million to cover an area close to 95,000 km2.
The first to go through the public hearing process was the CAN100 area in charge of the companies Equinor, Shell and YPF, those that obtained the corresponding permission to initiate the exploratory activities that would begin in October.
The CGT also considered that “Argentina has the opportunity to change its productive profile with this type of project and become an exporter of energy to the world, generate foreign currency significantly and avoid recurring crises.”
I also point out “the impact of this type of project on SMEs that provide services to the industry. The current chain is highly developed and has a federal presence, benefiting not only the companies in the productive basins but also other provinces with industries from other profile, such as metalworking, construction and services”.
The hydrocarbon industry is the one with the greatest employment multiplier effect in the economy. According to the Center for Production Studies, there are 5.1 indirect jobs for every direct job. If we take into account that a single project could generate 22,000 direct jobs, the total employment effect is more than 100,000 jobs in total.
